Yes, it’s okay to take a week off your newsletter

Oh man, I hope you didn’t notice this.

I phoned it in with my newsletter for the entire month of July — with the exception of this email which a few people said was my best ever. People just love pictures and real-life stuff, I guess.

A dose of truth:

I have been grinding so fucking hard all month, and self-soothing in all the wrong ways (vape pen, vodka, occasional bumps of ketamine at a completely inappropriate time of day), and some of the right ones (dancing to “Will You Be There” 5x in a single day, working side-by-side with my friend Kendra Hoffman).

But it’s got me thinking—

“Do I really need to send a newsletter every week?“

I am noodling on how necessary that still is — for me, specifically. For most businesses who haven’t established the habit yet, it’s pretty important. I tell all my clients and customers to publish a weekly newsletter. For lots of reasons:

👉 To build the habit of publishing regularly (and build trust with yourself)
👉 To create trust and authority with your subscribers
👉 To get better at writing
👉 To explore your ideas and create a body of work
👉 To nurture the people most likely to become your customers
👉 To remind people you’re still in business
👉 To make MUNNEY
👉 To improve your deliverability

I could come up with more reasons all day!

Every single member in my mastermind Power publishes a weekly-ish newsletter, and all of them have 6-figure businesses. Successful people do this. It’s pretty much a must if you run a business like mine. Consistency is what helps people get to know your business and your brand. It’s the reason I have a legendary engagement score and subscribers who’ve stuck with me through a million left turns.

Can you skip a week?

Maybe, but a lot of people find one leads to another, and then suddenly it’s been six months.

…or maybe that’s just something we tell ourselves. That’s worth interrogating too.

I can only speak for me.

I’m firmly in the habit. I’m not going to fall off the wagon if I skip one week. On the other hand, I will definitely lose subscribers by sending half-assed emails and reusing stuff just to tick a box.

On that note, I’m taking two weeks off writing a weekly email. (You’ll still get promos about Power and Song & Story, unless you opt-out of those.)

I need rest so damn bad!

Fortunately I’ll be camping next week with Maegan Megginson, who is literally a professional at resting, and runs workshops on the many forms of rest that don’t include sitting around doing nothing, which is unfortunately not in my DNA.

TK signing off for two weeks!

Now your turn:

What’s one thing you blew off this summer, friend? What do you wish you could blow off but feel like you can’t?

Hit “reply” and tell me.

Let’s dream together.
