How To Open Up A Direct Line To God (Or Whatever You Call Her)

Maybe you noticed I changed the picture in my email signature.*

It’s a video-turned-GIF of me leading my very first Song Circle, at Laura Sprinkle’s Camp Rootabl last summer.**  I texted the video to my new-at-the-time boyfriend, who was eager to discuss it with me when I got back.

“Have you seen your face?,” he asked me.

Um, obviously.

I was there, bruh. And I know what my face looks like.

“But have you seen the joy?,” he asked again, prompting me to look closer.

I have since watched this video dozens of times, studying the joy in my own face. I am SO THANKFUL to the gracious human who took this video, so that it could be a lamppost for my future.

Since that circle, I’ve hosted a half a dozen more. I’ve also introduced songs around the dinner table, into casual conversations with strangers, at mastermind retreats, with two hundred unsuspecting humans at Kate Northrup’s Relaxed Money Live, and soon with two hundred more at another event I’ll be leading at in September.

Here’s me in Cleveland leading a song with fifty business leaders at xchange’s Appreciate Inquiry Summit Training.***

This work is a homecoming for me. It is more rewarding than all the affiliate leaderboards, 6-figure launches, and million-dollar years put together — and maybe also a culmination of those things, since they molded me into the kind of human who can lead in this way.

One participant thanked me after saying, “When I see someone so fully in their Self, leading in a way that is so fully real, something relaxes in me. My nervous system feels so calm.”

TRUE!

I was at an event earlier this year where it seemed like everyone was performing a role, like everyone was wearing a mask. All the people on stage were beautiful and had many followers and seemed to have no doubts about anything. It didn’t feel real. I didn’t know who anyone was or if I belonged there. The lack of psychological safety was deeply unsettling.

Singing creates an environment that is the opposite of that.

What I’ve learned about singing (and especially about singing with other people, and especially when you do it for a whole hour) is that it helps people feel a deep sense of “we are all going to be okay.”

And from that place creativity is unlocked, the heart and brain come back online and ideas flow through. Singing turns you into a human channel to something greater than yourself.

Call it God.

Call it The Mother.

Call it the mystery, it’s all the same.

Singing brings us one giant leap closer to this thing that so many of us long to be connected to, to be protected and directed by. It calls the spirit home, where we can be met with the most loving arms, and receive direction around what is real and what to do next.

I want to dedicate my life to that work, to build a business that is all about facilitating people to come home to the truth within themselves, using song as the main tool in my box.

If you want to experience it yourself, you can!

On October 16-19, I’ll be hosting a business retreat called Song & Story. I’ll be doing a small promotion just to the waitlist, and a few people who’ve already raised their hand for it. Spots are limited – I hope to have 20-30 participants.

And if you’re like, “What on earth?! I could not imagine myself singing in front of actual humans, Tarzan!” — that’s okay, too. You are not alone in that feeling.

Just know that I will be using all my powers of persuasion to get you on board. 😉

**10/10 recommend Camp Rootabl, btw, and it’s happening really soon in Maine. Tickets available here

***I wish you could hear us sing the words to Stronger Than The Fear by Sarina Patridge! It brought me so much peace.

Our bond is stronger than the fear
Our bond is stronger than the fear
Our bond is stronger than the fear
We see the path before us
And we are not afraid
We are a mighty chorus
And we are not afraid
